Happy 35th anniversary to The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway!

It has been 35 years since Phantom opened at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway on 26 January 1988. The joint production by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh became the longest-running show in Broadway history in January 2006 when it surpassed Cats. The Broadway debut starred Michael Crawford as The Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine Daaé. Crawford won a Tony for his performance, as did director Harold Prince and costume and set designer, Maria Bjornson. The show was named the Best Musical of 1988.

When Phantom closes on Broadway this April, it will be leaving on a high note. The show, which has welcomed 20 million visitors, as well as countless cast and crew members, has been performed on stage at the Majestic nearly 14,000 times. This year, Phantom will play in 15 countries across 4 continents and in 7 languages! Along with Broadway and the West End, the show continues to play in Melbourne, Osaka and Prague.
