The smash hit soundtrack to the award-winning musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, is now on Yoto!
With a story narrated by lyricist, Tim Rice, and featuring a special message from composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, there’s something for everyone with high-energy numbers alongside heartfelt ballads, and musical influences ranging from calypso and funk to country and western. And of course, you’ll find those all-time classics “Any Dream Will Do”, “Go, Go, Go Joseph” and “Close Every Door”, all from the 1991 London Cast Recording featuring Jason Donovan
Tim Rice first contacted Andrew via a letter he wrote on 21 April 1965. In the letter, Tim said he was told Andrew was "looking for a ‘with it’ writer of lyrics".
Tim had been writing pop songs for a short while and particularly enjoyed writing the lyrics. Tim ended the letter with "I wondered if you consider it worth your while meeting me. I may fall far short of your requirements, but anyway it would be interesting to meet up – I hope!
Andrews's talent was pretty obvious even at that young age and they soon began writing musicals together.
The second show they collaborated on was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. At the end of February 1967, Andrew received a letter from the Music Master of Colet Court School, the junior part of St Paul’s School in Hammersmith. Andrew was asked to compose a pop cantata for their choir, which had performed and recorded two epic Bible stories in light pop music already, which were just enough novelty to make parents smile and keep a class of unmusical kids out of detention.
Tim likes that Joseph still brings people of all ages into the theatre, and that it's a show that mum and dad don't mind going to see again, and most importantly, that it doesn’t talk down to kids.
Tim Rice said:
“If you're writing for young people, or very young people, it's good to use words sometimes that they might not know, because they'll learn them.”
