Song and Dance Opens

The original London production of Song and Dance opened at The Palace Theatre in London on 26th March 1982 after Variations, a musical piece composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber for his brother Julian, was combined with Tell Me on a Sunday, written with Don Black to create a “Concert for the Theatre”.

Variations was choreographed by Anthony van Laast. The work was then combined with Tell Me on a Sunday (an Andrew Lloyd Webber/Don Black song cycle) to produce Song and Dance, the original London production of which starred Marti Webb, Wayne Sleep and, later, Lulu and Sarah Brightman.

The Daily Mail’s Jack Tinker said of the production: “With Don Black’s most evocative and sophisticated lyrics, we are taken on an emotional odyssey… (Marti Webb’s) performance never loses its winning appeal. Wayne Sleep and a dazzling troupe of high-octane dancers supply the language of the dance. A series of pyrotechnic styles flash and fizz the rest of the evening away…”
