Lee Mead's final performance as Joseph in the West End
After 18 months of performances onstage at London’s Adelphi Theatre, Any Dream Will Do winner Lee Mead hung up his famous Technicolor Dreamcoat on 10th January 2009.
Lee won the highly coveted title role in the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat after weeks of public voting on BBC1’s Any Dream Will Do. During the programme’s run Lee became an immensely popular candidate and by the time the final was aired he had secured his position as the nation’s favourite and won an army of devoted fans. Many of these turned up for his final performance as Joseph. After the final curtain the audience erupted in with a standing ovation and tumultuous applause as Andrew Lloyd Webber appeared onstage to present Lee with his very own Dreamcoat.
Amidst the loud cheers that were a staple of his Joseph run, Lee thanked Joseph creators Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber – who, having acted as a judge on Any Dream Will Do, told Lee’s many fans, “You voted for him – and you got it spectacularly right.”
Lee passed the Dreamcoat onto Gareth Gates, who stepped into the role of Joseph on 9th February 2009.

Wow, Wow, Wow. We would like to say thank you Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. We have literally just finished watching ‘Any Dream will Do’ (Lee – what can we say, you made us cry, gave us goose bumps you deserved to win, Bravo!) and (congrats to you and Denise on the birth of lovely Betsy, found it when we googled you) – We recently watched ‘How Do you Solve a Problem Like Maria’. Wow Connie, it was so lovely to see you singing again, you are amazing! Special thanks to Graham, we think you are fabulous! – We’ve been able to find out what you all have been up too thanks to the internet. Fantastic, such amazing talent. The judges really know what they are talking about! (By the way we live in Australia, so we are a bit behind, ok a lot behind – 3 years at least). Please, please, please we want to see more. Would love to see Zoe in concert. Hoping we can come to London one day to take in these amazing shows live. Thank you all so so Much! Take Care! Kindest Regards Debbie and Alan.
