The 25th Anniversary production of Jesus Christ Superstar
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar originally opened in New York on 12th September 1971. For the 25th anniversary of the show, which opened on 19th November 1996 in London’s Lyceum Theatre, Andrew was keen to redefine the show for the sensibilities of a late Twentieth Century audience whilst remaining true to the original ambition of the score.
Directed by Gale Edwards, with a design by John Napier, the 1996 version of the show starred Steve Balsamo as Jesus, Zubin Varla as Judas, and Joanna Ampil as Mary Magdalene. During its run, the production received a 1997 Olivier nomination for “Outstanding Musical Production”
