Andrew varies his Variations for the South Bank Sky Arts Awards

_The South Bank Sky Arts Awards_ launches tonight with a brand new theme tune. After a personal request from Melvyn Bragg, Andrew has refreshed the show’s original theme tune Variations 1-4, and provided a variation on his _Variations_, played again by his brother Julian. Andrew wrote _Variations_ in 1977 for Julian, and the piece later became part of the show _Song and Dance_. _The South Bank Show_ has used the piece as its theme tune since its 1977 launch, and as Melvyn said last year, “It inspired the only television titles to win a Prix Italia.”

Visitors to the _The South Bank Sky Arts Awards_ website will from today be able to view a video of Andrew, Julian, Melvyn and the band recording the track in the studio. During the recording Andrew chats to Melvyn and Julian about _Variations_, the key changes which make all the difference to the end result, and why he hasn’t written more pieces for Julian.

_The South Bank Sky Arts Awards_ are broadcast tonight, Tuesday 25th January, at 9pm.
