100 years of The London Palladium

In a special programme to be broadcast again this Saturday 15th January – after an initial broadcast on New Years Eve – Andrew Lloyd Webber will join a host of guests from the theatre and entertainment industries as they share their recollections of the world-famous London Palladium, which marked its centenary on Sunday 26th December.

The much-loved London Palladium – designed by Frank Matcham – opened on Boxing Day 1910 and became famous, partly through television, as the “Ace Variety Theatre of the World”. It was a venue to which all performers aspired and has hosted more annual Royal Variety Performances than any other theatre. Earlier this month the Palladium hosted its 37th annual Royal Variety Performance, a fitting celebration to mark the end of the theatre’s centenary year.

At a star-studded party to mark the 100th birthday in October, Andrew announced his plans for the rebuilding and refurbishment of the London Palladium’s front of house, ahead of his new production of _The Wizard of Oz_, which opens at the Palladium in March 2011 (previews from 7 February).

In the BBC2 programme, ’100 Years of The London Palladium’, Andrew joins guests including Michael Crawford – who will return to the Palladium stage next year to play The Wizard in _The Wizard of Oz_ – and former ‘Sunday Night at the London Palladium’ host Bruce Forsyth to share some of the gossip, glamour and behind-the-scenes stories of one of the world’s most famous theatres, as it celebrates its 100th birthday.

You can watch the programme again on BBC2 this Saturday 15th January at 6pm.
