Andrew wrote a Requiem Mass that premiered in New York on 25 February 1985 at St Thomas Church, inspired by an article he had read in the New York Times. It was about a Cambodian boy who had the option of killing his mutilated sister or being killed himself. The subsequent death of a journalist in the Northern Ireland conflict who had just interviewed Andrew, also provided a muse, and would be a subject Andrew would return to later in his career with The Beautiful Game. The Requiem Mass was dedicated to his father, William Lloyd Webber, who had died in 1982.
The composition achieved a Grammy Award in 1986 in the category of best classical composition. Perhaps surprisingly given the classical nature of the work, the Pie Jesu from Requiem climbed to the top of the popular music charts in Great Britain.

In 1977, he wrote Variations for his brother Julian, based upon Paganini's original theme for violin. Variations later became the "Dance" aspect of the show Song and Dance and one of the variations became very widely known when it was adopted as the theme tune for the television arts programme The South Bank Show.
