Following the phenomenal success of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in the UK, the search has begun to discover a bright new Maria for the forthcoming Canadian production of The Sound of Music.
The lead role of Maria in the Canadian production will be cast by the public through an eight-part national primetime television series which will air on CBC Television next summer.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said: “The role of Maria is pivotal to the success of The Sound of Music. It needs a performer with amazing vocal talent, compelling acting abilities and remarkable stage presence who also exudes youth and vitality.
“The quality displayed by the Maria finalists in the UK, and the discovery of the remarkable Connie Fisher, proves the enormous wealth of untapped talent there is in the UK. I cannot wait to see if Canada can match that talent.”
This timeless family classic will be overseen in Canada by director Jeremy Sams, choreographer Arlene Philips and designer Robert Jones, who all won critical acclaim from London critics for their superb work on the West End production.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Ian and David Mirvish will present the North American premiere of the smash-hit London production of The Sound of Music at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre beginning in September 2008.
